I recently moved from San Francisco to NYC. In SF, I worked in online media at Dow Jones. Recently left Time Warner after working at the Time Inc division, specifically CNNMoney.

A little about my professional life:

Employment:

CNNMoney: Moved to NYC to join Time Warner and run BD for the CNNMoney properties (Fortune, Money, FSB and Business 2.0).

Dow Jones: Ran the Business Development efforts for WSJ.com, MarketWatch and Barron’s Online.

Merrill Lynch: Worked in NYC as an analyst in the M&A department focusing on healthcare and media investment banking. After a two year analyst stint, I moved to London to help develop the M&A advisory services for emerging market clients. Spent considerable time in Poland (working on Elektrim) and Georgia (privatizing the electricity distribution system with AES).

Weekend Pursuits:

Golf was slowly becoming a passion..a bad habit without a doubt. Used to hack it up at The Olympic Club (just started playing 2 years ago..a long road ahead).

Competitive nature may surface on occasion, especially during triathlons. Participated in over 9 triathlons to date..recently in the “Escape from Alcatraz” in June 2007 and Pleasanton Tri For Fun. Also: Treasure Island, Tiburon Tri and Wildflower.

Passion for Travel

..and finally, escapism a must on occasion through travel holidays….

Just returned from Thailand and Hong Kong (June 2008). Amazing visit to numerous Wats, a golden buddha and the like.

Moving to NYC, its easy to become complacent and not enjoy the myriad of activities this city has to offer. Here is a list of “Things to do in NYC”. I havent done all of them, but hope to cross them off the list before I leave the city.

(1) See a lecture at the New York Public Library. They get big name speakers coming through their monthly lecture series.

(2) Visit the Big Four: Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art (Moma), Tate Modern, Metropolitan Museum of Art
(3) Visit smaller but equally interesting venues: Frick museum, The Cloister Museum at Fort Tryon Park,

Guggenheim
(4) Grab drinks with friends on the roof deck at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (overlooking Central Park).

(5) Attend a play at the Central Park SummerStage
(6) Attend a movie in Bryant Park
(7) Visit Coney Island and the NY Aquarium
(8) During the summer, visit Sandy Hook and America’s oldest operating lighthouse
(9) See a TV show taping (ex: The Late Show with David Letterman)
(10) Free NY historic neighborhood sponsored tour with the Municipal Arts Society.
(11) Walk around galleries in Chelsea and then stop off for a pint at Half King (one of the best pubs downtown)
(12) Get outside the city and go up north along the Hudson River Valley and visit any of the state parks.

“20 things I want to do before I die”

(1) Travel to all 50 states.

(2) Travel to all seven continents before I am 40.

(3) Take my parents on an all expenses paid vacation in Europe.

(4) Sail around the Adriatic or Caribbean with family/friends for a week.

(5) Visit ruins in Tikal, Guatemala.

(6) Hike the Great Wall of China.

(7) Climb a 20,000 foot peak.

(8) Learn another language (presumably spanish) and be able to converse while on holiday.

(9) Bike a leg of the Tour de France.

(10) Run a marathon on another continent.

(11) Score under 100 in 18 holes of golf.

(12) Attend the Kentucky Derby.

(13) Rent a Lamborghini for the weekend and cruise through Napa / Sonoma wine country on a hot summer day.

(14) Donate a gift to my undergraduate university.

(15) Find time to volunteer.

(16) Reconnect with 5 friends from high school and 5 from college.

(17) Dress my age (ie not like someone 20 years older)!

(18) Buy a home on the beach. Wake up every morning to the sounds of crashing waves.

(19) Take on a role in local civic affairs.

(20) Plant a tree every five years.

“Places to eat”

I started compiling “best of” sources of food. Whenever I think about going out to eat in San Francisco or NYC or when on the road, I think of the types of food I am interested in…vs where to eat or other ways to filter…such as “cool, hip place”, “ambience”, “scenery”.

A few favorites:

Mexican – Murrietta’s ….a family favorite in Bonita, CA.

Thai – Khin Kao in NYC’s Soho district.

Hamburgers – shack at Olympic Club in San Francisco

French Onion Soup – Perry’s on Union Street in San Francisco

Mojitos – Havana…where else!

Red table wine – BR Cohn in Sonoma.

Steak – bacon wrapped rib eye from the local farms in Granville Iowa.

Citrus Salad – Breaker’s Hotel in West Palm Beach, FL.

Yogurt w/ fresh fruit – South Beach, Miami at the News Cafe Restaurant on Ocean Blvd (mid morning w/ the green parakeets).

BBQ – Dinosaurs up on 131st street in NYC (this is quite debatable but an interesting experience – Harlem, under the train overpass, 1 block from the Hudson).

Lobster Roll – Cyrils Fish Shack (Amagansett, NY) right off Route 27 heading towards Montauk.

From an article in Men’s Health, a few places were added to my “top places to eat” menu.Will hopefully check them off in the next 12 months.

BBQ Brisket – Taylor, Texas

Key Lime Pie – Steve’s Authentic, a shop at the Brooklyn waterfront warehouse.

Oysters – The Hama Hama Seafood Company on the Olympic Peninsula in Lilliwup, Washington. Same place where Chez Panisse gets their goods.

Lobster Roll – A place called Lunch located on Route 27 between Montauk and Amagansett – hearty chunks of lobster on a light hot dog bun. Delicious on a hot August summer day.
